Living in New York is very different than a short visit. Has a rat run over your foot while waiting for the subway? Have you walked five blocks to do laundry? Have you had trouble paying rent? That's a real New York welcome!
Do you know what New York City does have in addition to rats and high rent? Awesome plant-based restaurants which are easy to seek out even if you are just visiting. Some are hippy-dippy, some are basically vegan junk food, and some are right in the middle. That's what I call the sweet spot.
Here are some of my favorites! You can right click on this link and open it in another tab to view the map.
Definitely order the combination pancakes appetizer (pictured above) and either the kimchi stone bowl or the avocado stone bowl. Also, wear socks. They ask you to remove your shoes at the door.
Try the baked goods and the mac n' cheese. Chef Chloe Coscarelli was the first person to win the competition with a vegan recipe on the TV show "Cupcake Wars".
Chickpea & Olive
Try the pulled bbq sandwich. You will think you are eating pulled pork, but you're not. Mind tricks. This is the magic of jack fruit. They have food trucks so check their social media to see where they are day-to-day. I had the pleasure of eating their food at Smorgasburg.
Try the pb&j doughnut. Or any of them. I haven't had a bad one yet, but I've done a lot of research. It's all for you, my Plant Based For Me community. You are welcome. I will continue to eat doughnuts for you.
Order the "feast" and expect to have leftovers. There are nine different dishes on the platter and you eat it using your hands and the sourdough flatbread. There is a gluten-free bread available.
Peacefood Cafe Downtown
Try the chive biscuit if you're on the go. The restaurant is kosher.
Blossom Du Jour
Order one of the best vegan burgers I've ever had- The Skyscraper. It has onion rings on it. Better tuck a napkin into your shirt for this one.
Also one of the best vegan burgers I've ever had, but different. Order the Superiority Burger without the cheese.
Chennai Garden by Tiffin Wallah
I loved the chana saag. Some dishes are not vegan, but they are clearly marked on the menu. They are known for their dosas, but I have not had the pleasure of trying one.
